The world of digital photography has grown by leaps and bounds over the course of the past ten years, and today there are many digital cameras available with fully manual settings, and which operate like traditional SLR (standard lens reflection) cameras. Some are referred to as digital SLRs and others as prosumer cameras because their features add the control of a professional photographer to the ease of a fully automated digital camera. People are able to take better digital pictures than ever before with such advanced equipment, and it is a wise idea to spend some time with the owner’s manual in order to become familiar with what such cameras offer. For example, while most standard digital cameras are loaded with all sorts of automatic settings, like action, portrait and macro features, they may not take the best pictures when set to them. A digital SLR allows the user to adjust shutter speed, ISO and f-stops quickly and easily, without disabling or adjusting any of the pre-set features. Understanding how these settings affect an image is the most important thing about using the new digital camera. For example, ISO traditionally meant “film speed”, but with the absence of film the ISO setting will still have an effect on the final image. Increasing the ISO setting may make it easier to capture action shots without any blurring from motion, even in lower light situations, but it will have its “down side” as well. It is important for digital camera owners to understand that changes to ISO, and shutter speed, can cause something called noise in an image. This is a graininess that results from the appearance of the pixels in the photograph, which are seen like small dots. While they can be used to create a special effect, most people do not want “noise” in their photographs. This leads to the use of software to clean up or enhance digital photographs. There are many programs that have noise reduction filters that help to fix photographs that have suffered such effects. Purchasing a high-end digital SLR camera also makes the purchase of compatible and affective computer software a necessity as well. When reading the owner’s manual and getting to know the features on a digital SLR it is also a good idea to understand all of the flash settings, and also how to disable the flash when necessary. Most prosumer camera owners will have a separate flash unit that can fit into the “shoe” on the body of the camera, or one that can be triggered by a cable. This is a good idea to investigate if high-quality photography is something desired. Exploring and experimenting with a digital SLR is the only way to discover the incredible capabilities of the equipment.
